Configuring Increment Sprints

The Sprint Length and Sprint Count properties are stored at the Increment level rather than at the Program level.

This allows a change of cadence during the life of the Program.

When configuring Sprints for a Program Increment, you have 2 options:

  • all of the teams in your Program Increment share the same sprints or

  • all of the teams in your Program Increment manage their own sprint which live on their agile board in Jira

Each team is able to independently manage their Sprints as of the v1.2.0 release. Any future Sprints the team has already created on their board, can be adopted by the Program. All the work scheduled in those Sprints will be reflected in the Program.

When there are no pre-created Sprints in a Team's board, Easy Agile Programs will automatically create them for you.

** Please note: for users upgrading from a version before v1.2.0, this is a breaking change. Any Programs created in previous versions will need to be recreated.

Shared/Global Sprints vs. Team Managed Sprints

Shared/Global Sprints

Benefits of configuring a Program Increment to use shared/global sprints in Jira include:

  • central sprint management
  • ease of cross-team reporting

To configure shared/global sprints for an Increment:

  • Select Teams use shared sprints from a dedicated board under the Sprint source header:

  • Under the Shared sprint board heading, select the Board where your shared sprints live/should be created on
  • Each Program Increment sprint can be configured via their corresponding dropdown. Here is where you can configure any active or future sprints on your dedicated board. If no sprints exist, Easy Agile Programs will create them for you

Team Managed Sprints

Benefits of configuring a Program Increment to use team managed sprints in Jira include:

  • autonomy of the teams to manage their own Sprints on their agile boards

To configure team managed sprints for an Increment:

  • Select Teams independently manage their own sprints on their team board under the Sprint source header:

  • Once selected, each team will need to map the Sprints from their agile board in Jira to the Program Increment
  • Navigate to the Increment Overview page, where you will see a blue Schedule Team Issues button next to each team:

  • Clicking on the Schedule Team Issues button next to a team's name will present you with the following screen:

  • Each Program Increment sprint can be configured via their corresponding dropdown. Here is where you can configure any active or future sprints on your dedicated board. If no sprints exist, Easy Agile Programs will create them for you

Modifying Increment Sprints for a Team

If the incorrect sprints were configured for a team board. It is possible to reset the configuration by removing the team board from the program, via the "Edit Program" button. Then adding the board back via the same button.

As a side effect, this will reset the sprints of every increment within the program, so they will need to be reconfigured too.
