Filtering Epics on the Story Map

Learning how to filter the epics on your Story Map is crucial to being able to effectively focus in on the work you and your team care about.

Filtering epics, reduces the breadth of your Story Map and allows for more focused Sprint or Release planning sessions and retrospectives.

To open the Filters drawer, click on the Filters button in the Story Map header. To filter epics, ensure the Filter Epics toggle has been selected:

Filtering Epics by Component

You can filter the epics on your Story Map by the components created in your Jira project.

With Filter Epics toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Components dropdown. The dropdown will display all the components from your Jira project. Select the component/s you would like to filter your epics on the Story Map by. Only epics with the selected component/s will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Epics by Quick Filters

You can filter the epics on your Story Map by the quick filters from your Jira board.

With Filter Epics toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Quick Filters dropdown. The dropdown will display all of the quick filters from your Jira board. Select the quick filter/s you would like to filter your epics on the Story Map by. Only epics that match the conditions of your selected quick filter/s will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Epics by Assignee

You can filter the epics on your Story Map by assignee.

With Filter Epics toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Assignees dropdown. The dropdown will display all the users in your Jira instance. Either search by text, or scroll to find and select the assignee/s you would like to filter your epics on the Story Map by. Only epics assigned to the selected users will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Epics by Status Category

You can filter the epics on your Story Map by status category - To Do, In Progress and Done.

With Filter Epics toggled in the Filters drawer, scroll down to the Status dropdown. By default, epics in the To Do and In Progress status' will be shown, and Done epics will be hidden on the Story Map. To show Done epics, click on the dropdown and select Done.

To hide epics in a status category click on the x next to their name. Only epics in the selected status category will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Epics by Persona & Importance to Persona

When you have Easy Agile Personas installed in conjunction with Easy Agile User Story Maps, you will have the ability to filter your epics by Persona and Importance to Persona.

With Filter Epics toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Personas dropdown. The dropdown will display all of the Personas created in your Jira project. Select the personas/s you would like to filter your epics on the Story Map by. Only epics with the selected persona/s will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Epics and Swimlanes with no Issues

The Hide empty swimlanes and epics checkbox in the Filters drawer gives you quick and easy way to bring some focus to your Story Map.

Selecting this hides epics with no issues in them, and collapses empty swimlanes from the Story Map.

Click on the Filters button in the header, and scroll to the bottom of the Filters drawer. Select Hide empty swimlanes & epics.


Filtering issues in Issue Hierarchy on the Story Map

Filtering Issue Hierarchy by status

You can filter the issues in the additional hierarchy on Story Map by status category. To filter these issues by status category, click on the Filters button on the header. Ensure the filter for issue hierarchy has been selected in the Filter drawer. Navigate to the Status Category drop-down. By default, issues in the To Do and In Progress status categories will be shown, and Done issues will be hidden in the Issue Hierarchy on the Story Map. To show Done issues in the additional hierarchy layer, click on the dropdown and select Done.

Filtering unlinked issues in Issue Hierarchy

You can also filter on unlinked issues in the additional hierarchy layer. To show any issues which are not linked to the epics in the additional hierarchy layer on the Story Map, use the Show unlinked toggle in the Filters.

Filtering Issue Hierarchy by Components

You can filter the issues in the Issue Hierarchy on your Story Map by the components.

Select the filter for issue hierarchy in the Filters drawer and then click on the Components dropdown. The dropdown will display all the components from the Jira project of third layer hierarchy issues. Select the component/s you would like to filter your third layer issues on the Story Map by.


Filtering Issues on the Story Map

Filtering Issues by Component

You can filter the issues on your Story Map by the quick filters from your Jira board.

With Filter Issues toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Quick Filters dropdown. The dropdown will display all of the quick filters from your Jira board. Select the quick filter/s you would like to filter your issues on the Story Map by. Only issues that match the conditions of your selected quick filter/s will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Issues by Assignee

You can filter the issues on your Story Map by assignee.

With Filter Issues toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Assignees dropdown. The dropdown will display all the users in your Jira instance. Either search by text, or scroll to find and select the assignee/s you would like to filter your issues on the Story Map by. Only issues assigned to the selected users will be displayed on the Story Map.

Filtering Issues by Status Category

You can filter the issues on your Story Map by status category - To Do, In Progress and Done.

With Filter Issues toggled in the Filters drawer, scroll down to the Status dropdown. By default, issues in the To Do and In Progress status' will be shown, and Done issues will be hidden on the Story Map. To show Done issues, click on the dropdown and select Done.

Filtering Issues by Persona & Importance to Persona

When you have Easy Agile Personas installed in conjunction with Easy Agile User Story Maps, you will have the ability to filter your issues by Persona and Importance to Persona.

With Filter Issues toggled in the Filters drawer, click on the Personas dropdown. The dropdown will display all of the Personas created in your Jira project. Select the personas/s you would like to filter your issues on the Story Map by. Only issues with the selected persona/s will be displayed on the Story Map.


Saving and Sharing Views on the Story Map

Saved Views are saved filter combinations that can be shared with your team. This saves you from toggling on filters each time you view the Story Map to get a unique view of what work you want to focus on.

Examples of views might be:

  • Views per team member

  • A view of the work that is currently In Progress

  • A view of work that ladders up to an OKR (Objective Key Result)

Creating a new Saved View

First, toggle on some filters from the Filters drawer. See the above sections to learn how to use filters on the Story Map:

Once you have applied your desired filters, click on Save as new view beneath the Filters heading:

Enter your View Name of your new Saved View and click Save:

Your new View will be applied to the Story Map. Any views you create on the Story Map will appear under the My saved views heading:

Your team will be able to see and apply your Saved Views to their Story Map. The views you create will appear under the My team’s saved views header for your team mates, and the views they create will be available for you to use and appear under the My team’s saved views header.

Applying a Saved View to your Story Map

To apply a Saved View to your Story Map, click on the Saved Views button in the header and select the radio button next to the view you would like to update, for example: Work in progress:


The applied view name will replace the Saved Views text in the button in the Story Map header:

Updating/Editing a Saved View

To update a Saved View, it must be applied to your Story Map. View the section above to learn how to apply a Saved View to your Story Map.

Once the Saved View has been applied to your Story Map, open the Filters drawer and apply your updated filters. Click on Update view under the Filters heading:

Your new filter conditions will be saved to your applied Saved View.

Sharing a Saved View

You can share Saved Views with your team mates in 3 ways:

Copy the URL to share the active Saved View

Renaming a Saved View

To rename a Saved View, open the Saved Views menu and click on the menu next to the name of the View you’d like to update:

Select Rename view from the dropdown, enter your new View Name and hit Save:

Deleting a Saved View

To delete a Saved View, open the Saved Views menu and click on the menu next to the name of the View you’d like to delete:

Select Delete view from the dropdown, and hit the confirmation Delete button:
